What is auto insurance?

Auto insurance protects you against financial loss if you have an accident. It is a contract between you and the insurance company. You agree to pay the premium and the insurance company agrees to pay your losses as defined in your policy. Auto insurance provides property, liability and medical coverage:

Liability coverage pays for your legal responsibility to others for bodily injury or property damage.
Medical coverage pays for the cost of treating your own injuries & rehabilitation as a result of an auto accident.
Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) bodily injury coverage takes the place of the liability coverage the other driver did not have and pays for injuries to you and your passengers when the other driver did not have enough insurance to pay for your injuries.
Uninsured Motorist Property Damage (UMPD) is a separate type of UM coverage that pays for physical damages to property caused by an uninsured driver. However, since collision and UMPD pay for the same damages, you do not need UMPD if you have collision coverage.
Collision coverage covers damage to your car that results from a collision with another vehicle or object. You can choose a relatively low deductible or a high one- but keep in mind that a higher deductable will result in a lower premium.
Comprehensive coverage pays if your car is stolen or is damaged by something other than a collision with another car or object (i.e. fire, falling objects, explosions, hail, vandalism, and animal collisions etc.). Comprehensive insurance will also reimburse you if your windshield is cracked or shattered. Some companies offer glass coverage with or without a deductible.

What is homeowners insurance?

Homeowners insurance provides you with financial protection against insured disasters such as fire. A typical homeowners policy provides property and liability coverage.

Property coverage insures the home's structure and the contents inside it. It may pay for:
- Repairing or rebuilding your damaged home;
- Temporary shelter if your home is uninhabitable;
- Replacement of your home's contents and your personal belongings due to damage or theft.
Liability Protection is automatically included in all homeowner and tenant insurance policies. This coverage protects you against a claim or lawsuit resulting from bodily injury or property damage to others caused by your negligence. It covers you and family members residing in the home, including dependants under age 21 that live elsewhere, such as college.
Floods and earthquakes often cause damage that are not covered under your homeowners insurance. If you are looking for this additional protection, you will need to purchase specific endorsements and/or separate policies for flood and earthquake coverage.
Additional protection provided by Umbrella coverage lets you increase your liability protection beyond the homeowner's policy limits. You may be able to buy an umbrella to protect yourself from the possibility of a huge negligence lawsuit.

Term Life: Generally less expensive than other life insurance products and is designated for a certain time period or to a certain age. Disability Insurance: A 20-year-old worker has a 30 percent chance of becoming disabled before reaching retirement age, according to the SSA. People who suddenly can't work due to an accident or sickness still will be responsible for paying their bills. Disability is typically defined as the inability to work due to an illness or injury. There are two main types of disability insurance: short-term and long-term:

Short-term disability insurance replaces a portion of the policyholder's salary for a short period—typically from three to six months following a disability. The specific percentage of replaced income varies with different policies.

Long-term disability insurance typically begins after an insured person is disabled and unable to work for at least six months. The coverage period can extend for a specific number of years or until the insured retires or turns 65, depending on the policy coverage selected and the type of disability.

Health insurance covers most of the cost of keeping you healthy and getting you healthy if you become ill. Comprehensive health insurance includes doctor visits, hospital care, tests, certain therapies and sometimes prescription drugs.

What is watercraft insurance?

Most types of watercraft are eligible for coverage either by endorsement to your Homeowners policy or by writing a separate Pleasure Boat or a Yacht policy. Either option provides broad coverage for damage to the watercraft as well as liability and medical payments coverage.
